Trail Escape (Tiny Horse Game Jam)
Web Version 1.0 is available!
This is the project page for my Tiny Horse Game Jam submission.
The game is now finished! I ran into a lot of technical issues so this is a rather minimal game (only one trail available), but maybe I will update it with more content in the future. I'm just glad I made it in time!
You can play this in your browser or download the ROM and use it with a GameboyColor/Gameboy Advance emulator or even put it onto an actual cartridge and play it on your real Gameboy.
Controls for the web version:
Z, Y = A
X = B
ARROW KEYS, WASD = DPAD
ENTER = START
SHIFT = SELECT
Known Issues/Bugs:
- text display can become glitched if you move the cursor too fast
- textboxes stick around in the background
- some screen flashing
- minor color palette glitches
- colors are rather dark on the ROM
Features:
- runs in browser and on GameboyColor hardware
- intro cutscene
- quick time event gameplay
- one trail ride (for now) with randomized number of dangers to encounter (0 to 3)
- scoreboard that saves summaries of your rides
Cartridge Requirements for the ROM:
If you want to use the ROM with a flash cartridge, you will need a MBC5 or MBC3 type cartridge that can either use battery saves (SRAM) or flash saves (FRAM).
I use a BennVenn MBC3 2MiB cartridge with 32KiB FRAM and the GBxCart RW v1.4b flasher to write it.

The cutscene is amazingly beautiful and was a joy to see once I figured out how to start the game proper. And the dangerous critters being like a cat, a dog, a bird, pretty funny x) I assume in later trail rides you might face real dangers. Good job, and neat that it's an actual gameboy game too. The artwork for the game is it's highlight.
Thank you for your comment and for playing! I hope to add more stuff to this game at some point in the fuutre. :)
